Culture, Art and History, Ocre

The Commune of Ocre is part of the Sirente-Velino Park established by the Region of Abruzzo in 1989 and covers an area of 140 hectares in the Province of Aquila. Initially the territory of Ocre and the whole Aterno river basin was entirely inundated by sea water. Only the highest peaks, namely the Gran Sasso mountains, the Ocre mountain (2204m) and the Monte Sirente emerged from the water. Subsequently, the uplifting of the Appennino mountain chain caused the interruption of the communication with the sea and the gradual formation of a lake which found its outlet in the Aterno river.

The territory is mainly of chalky nature. There are three Carsic caves: the Fossa Raganesca (within the locality of Valle), a wonderful example of land depression, the Fossa del Castellano and i Prati del Lago. The commune of Ocre can be visited in several ways, the one we highly recommend would be to visit the monuments and the inhabited areas in order to admire the culture, art and history of such magnificent places.

For those of you who adore being immersed in nature and are captivated by the beauty of rare landscapes, the territory of Ocre and the Ocre mountain are the ideal place to indulge in long excursions and explore its itineraries.

The San Giovanni lake was a small water reservoir

In 1956 the honorable Vincenzo of the Dukes of Rivera (1890 - 1967) launched a project aimed at expanding the two lakes (San Giovanni lake and San Raniero lake) and constructing a system of canals for irrigation of agricultural land. The project was implemented by an Engineer by the name of Valentini.

The technical characteristics of the new lake are as follows:

Area - 7.76 acres (3.14 hectares)
Maximum circumference when full - 730,50 m/l
Reservoir volume level when full - 410,000 m/c
Normal reservoir volume level - 280,000 m/c

Flora
Below 1000 meters there are mainly almond plants (Prunus dulcis) and chestnut plants (Castanea sativa) in the village of Cordone part of the jurisdiction of San Felice d'Ocre. The fox, the hedgehog (Enicaceus europaneus), the weasel (Fustella nivalis), the squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) and the viper (Vipera aspis) are widely present on the Ocre territory. The viper is commonly found on the north-western front of Mount Ocre, particularly at the top of the valley of Fossa Grande.
